Mildred S. Hassell

Mrs. Mildred Sawyer Hassell, 84, of Columbia, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Plumblee Nursing Center in Plymouth.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church, Columbia, with the Rev. Royce Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Hassell was born in Tyrrell County, the daughter of the late Algon and Sarah Voliva Sawyer. She was married to Marvin W. Hassell, who survives. She worked as an administrative assistant with the Tyrrell County Clerk of Superior Court until her retirement. She was a member of Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church, Columbia.
Survivors include one daughter, Anita H. Jarvis of Columbia; one sister, Lola S. Brickhouse of Columbia and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Beatrice S. Brickhouse, Lillian S. Davis, Thelma S. Hollis and Essie S. Bateman and four brothers, Sherman Sawyer, Ottis Sawyer, Edward Sawyer and Rossie Sawyer.
The family will receive friends today from 7-9 p.m. at Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church, Columbia.
