Chance of snowin the forecastfor late Sunday

If you ventured outside this morning (perhaps to retrieve your Daily News) you might well be.
That’s because this morning’s low was expected to be between 15 and 20 degrees, close to records for the date. And just to put an additional chill on your plans for the day, highs probably won’t get past freezing.
According to meteorologist Robert Frederick with the National Weather Service in Newport, a mass of Arctic air from Canada swept over our region, bringing the frigid temperatures. Frederick expects temperatures to be below normal through January, though Saturday should warm slightly into the upper 30s and Sunday should soar into the mid-40s.
Come Sunday night, we might also see a bit of snow. Frederick said a moist front should pass through that night and bring with it a “bit” of precipitation.
But despite the numbing cold, things could be a lot worse: Frederick spent the early part of his National Weather Service career in Aberdeen, S.D., where this morning’s low temperature reached minus 40. The coldest temperature Frederick ever experienced, though, was a relatively balmy minus 30, he said.
Beaufort County will be downright tropical compared to that, though Frederick commiserates with his North Carolina brethren.
