Dr. William Edward Kidd, age 83, passed quietly and peacefully away on Monday morning, January 26, 2009 at his home. He had been in declining health for several years.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday January 28, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Washington officiated by Dr. Jimmy Moore. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery of Washington. Jimmy Leach, Brick Brown, Fred Scales, Bill Oden, Tom Dunnigan, Steve Walker, Bobby Rees, Hodges Hackney and Charles Phillips will serve as pallbearers.
Dr. Kidd was a native of Warrenton, where he was born on July 31, 1925 the son of the late Walter Williamson Kidd and the late Ruby Matthews Kidd. He attended and graduated from John Graham School. After three years of service in the U.S. Navy, he attended North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1953, he graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. While attending the University of Maryland, he was in the U.S. Army Dental Corps ROTC for four years.
Dr. Kidd married the former Hester Anne Bizzell on July 28, 1951 who survives. After practicing dentistry in his hometown, he came to Washington to take over the practice of Dr. Durant Bell on West Main Street.
In 1962, he moved his office to the corner of Brown and 11th Streets where he remained until his retirement in December 1994.
During Dr. Kidd’s years in dentistry, he has been an active member of the Pamlico Study Club, the East Central Study Club, the Loblolly Study Club, the Fifth District Dental Society serving as president from 1972-73, the North Carolina Dental Society and the American Dental Association. He was also a fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry. He served on the Board of the Dental Foundation of North Carolina for six years and was a director for 11 years. He had a continuing quest for learning and attended the Pankey Institute for higher learning in Miami.
Dr. Kidd was quoted as saying how grateful he was for the years he had working for the people of Beaufort and surrounding counties and wished to express his appreciation to his many patients.
Surviving along with Dr. Kidd’s wife Hester Anne of the home are two sons; William Edward Kidd, Jr. and wife Jane of Raleigh, NC and Henry Matthews Kidd and wife Amanda of Raleigh, NC, a brother; Walter Williamson Kidd, Jr. of Arcola, NC and three grandchildren; Henry Matthews Kidd, Jr., Anne Rowland Kidd and William Bryan Kidd.
Dr. Kidd was preceded in death by a brother; Jack Carlson Kidd and two sisters; Alvis Bell and Margaret Blalock.
The family will receive friends Tuesday January 27, 2009 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the home located at 281 Riverside Road, Washington. Dr. Kidd will lie in state at First Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 from 10:30 a.m. until the funeral hour.
