Mrs. Mary Ambrose Bowen Ross, age 93, a resident of 289 Bowen Road, Bath, NC died Saturday January 31, 2009 at her home.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday February 3, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington officiated by G. Cleveland Edwards and Randy Gray Moore. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Ross’ grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Ross was born in Beaufort County on November 27, 1915, daughter of the late George Wiley Ambrose and the late Zelma Rena Waters Ambrose. She was a 1933 graduate of Bath High School. Mrs. Ross married Brinkley Archbell Bowen on December 8, 1935 who preceded her in death on May 5, 1978; on April 7, 1979 she married Jack Nicholson Cutler who preceded her in death on February 10, 1982 and married David Henry Ross on September 19, 1987 who preceded her in death on September 21, 1994. Mrs. Ross was a member of Beaufort County Grange, Bath Historic Foundation, Beaufort County Democratic Party, Athens Chapel Church of Christ, a member of her church ladies aid circle #1 and was active in all church and community activities. She was a homemaker and a tour guide for Historic Bath.
Survivors include a daughter: Betty Bowen Gurganus and her husband Kent of Bath; two sons: George Brinkley Bowen and his wife Loretta of Pantego and Lindsey Warren Bowen, Sr. and his wife Sandra of Hickory; three stepchildren: Patricia Ross Chandler of Vanceboro, Davey Ross Fulmer, of Washington and David Henry Ross, Jr. of Washington; a sister: Lorena Ambrose Sawyer of Greenville; seven grandchildren: Kent Rodgers Gurganus II and his wife Kim, Timothy Glenn Gurganus and his wife Susan, Penelope Gurganus Brooks, George Brinkley Bowen, II and his wife Linda, Stacey Respess Bowen and his wife Kris, Lindsay Warren Bowen, Jr. and his wife Dana and Ashley Williams Bass and his wife Kathy; nine great grandchildren: Benjamin Bowen Brooks, Ethan Rodgers Gurganus, Maci Ann Gurganus, Chloe Scott Gurganus, Katherine MacKenzie Bowen, Cameron Brinkley Bowen, Jack Williams Bowen, Nathanial Kinnion Bowen and Eliza Grace Bowen. Also surviving is Wanda Gordon, loving and faithful friend and caregiver. Mrs. Ross was preceded in death by five brothers: Ervin Bonner Ambrose, Aubrey Wendell Ambrose, Oadus Isiah Ambrose, George Ricks Ambrose and Carnie Ferrell Ambrose.
The family received friends 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday February 2, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and at other times at the home.
