Ruth Hayes Turnage Lupton died January 30, 2009, at age 90. She was born in Farmville, NC to Lillian Whitfield Turnage and Benjamin Otto Turnage.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 3, 2009, in Hollywood Cemetery in Farmville, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Washington, Rev. Danny Allen and Rev. Susan Harrison officiating.
She is survived by three daughters: Lillian Woolley and husband Jim of Lawrenceville, GA, Lyda Talley and husband Seth of Chocowinity, and Amy Lupton, also of Chocowinity; and by three grandsons, Matthew Warren Woolley of Athens, GA, and Seth Perkins and David Hayes Talley of Chocowinity.
She was preceded in death by her husband Denton Warren Lupton, Jr., brother Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Benjamin Otto Turnage, Jr. of Charleston, SC, sister Eva Mae Turnage Monk of Farmville and sister Jane Turnage Montague of Goldsboro.
Hayes grew up in Farmville and graduated from Farmville High School. She was a 1939 graduate of East Carolina Teachers College. After graduation she taught Home Economics in Belhaven.
Hayes owned and operated The Red Rooster craft store on W. Main St., Washington, during the ’70s. She was a charter member of the Pamlico River Quilters Guild, a lifelong Methodist, and a member of the Linda Titus Circle and Ruble Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church in Washington.
She was gracious, witty, humble, and ever devoted to her children.
