WASHINGTON, NC — Mr. Hal Ryland “Pop” Tankard, II, age 72, a resident of 78 Glen Haven East, Washington, died Monday, February 9, 2009 at Beaufort County Medical Center in Washington.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 12, 2009 at First United Methodist Church, West 2nd Street, with the Rev. Danny Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Miles Cox, Ryal Cox, Austin Thompson, Patrick Thompson, Thompson Brown, Frank Deaner, Jr., Troy Tyson, George Asby and Lee “Chris” Tankard will serve as pallbearers. Ed Latham, Sid Roberts, Horace Cowell, Bill Woolard, B. E. Singleton, Jr., Wayne Woolard and Derris Bradshaw will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Highway 264 East, Washington and other times at the home of Allison and Bill Bedsole, 412 Riverside Drive, Washington Park.
Mr. Tankard was born April 20, 1936 in Beaufort County. He was married to Patricia Dee Harrington Tankard for 50 years. He owned and operated Tankard Distributing Co. for 40 years until his retirement. Mr. Tankard was a member of the NC Wine Association and served as a board member. He was a graduate of Washington High School and attended NC State University and Campbell University.
Survivors include Patricia Dee Harrington Tankard; daughters Allison Tankard Bedsole and husband Bill of Washington, Ruth Tankard Thompson and husband Paul of Washington and LeAnne Tankard Brown and husband Tom of Greenville; grandchildren, Miles Cox and wife Bambi, Ryal Cox, Austin Thompson, Patrick Thompson, Thompson Brown and Bailey Brown; great grandchild Allison Ava-Haiyes Cox; sisters Kay Tankard Nicholls and Mary Tankard Asby and husband Danny; brother Lee D. Tankard and wife Mary of Bath; sister-in-law Missy Deaner and husband Frank; brothers-in-law Jess Harrington and wife Carol of Rocky Mount and Charles Harrington and wife Betty of Eden, NC; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Martin “Mumsie” Kugler Tankard and his father Hallie Ryland Tankard.
