Michael Edward Poorman, age 59, a resident of 2233 Biggs Road, Pinetown, NC took Jesus by the hand and was claimed as one of His own on Sunday, February 15, 2009. He was at home surrounded by his family.
A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. at the First Church of Christ Family Life Center, 10th Street, Washington with Ministers Steve Hill and Mark Lilley officiating.
Michael was born December 3, 1949 in Dayton, Ohio to the late Kenneth and Lorene Gurkin Poorman. He moved to Pinetown in 1968 and graduated from Bath High School. On August 9, 1969, he married the love of his life, Wanda Biggs. Michael was drafted and served in the United States Army. He was a 38-year employee at Texasgulf/PCS Phosphate, retiring in 2007 from the Mill Maintenance Department. After retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, playing golf, and watching his Tar Heels play.
Michael was an active member of First Church of Christ serving as a Deacon, a member of the Living Christmas Tree Choir, a youth group sponsor, as well as a member of the Disaster Relief, Encouragers, and Sunday Servants ministry teams. He had a passion for helping others and displayed that zeal by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life and teen youth mission trips. He continues to give of himself to others by donating his body to help further cancer research.
Michael is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Wanda; daughters Andrea Poorman Dixon and husband Dal of Washington; and Allison Poorman Mallison and husband, Mark of Greenville. He was a loving grandfather “Boo Boo” to Storm Hayden Mallison and Britain Ches Dixon. He is also survived by his sister Kathy Poorman Sharp, a brother, Kenneth R. Poorman Jr. and their children, and an aunt, Louise Gurkin. He was tremendously blessed to have a loving and supportive extended family.
Michael fought a courageous battle with cancer and never gave up…just gave out. His strength, courage, faith, and love for others were an inspiration to many and he will be greatly missed. He showed us all the strength of the human spirit.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday February 18th at First Church of Christ Family Life Center and other times at the home.
