1916 - 2009
James Kirk Ballance, 93, longtime Fairfield resident and more recently a resident of Cross Creek Health Care in Swan Quarter, died Monday, April 20, 2009 at Cross Creek.
Born in Fairfield, April 10, 1916, he was the son of the late James Madison and Lydia Jones Ballance. He was first married to the former Norma Simmons who preceded him in death in 1962. He later married the former Marian McConnville who also preceded him in death.
Kirk served in the U. S. Army during 1941 to 1945 and worked on the Manhattan Project building the Atomic Bomb. He then served in the Army Ready Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1953 as Master Sergeant. He served as Postmaster in Fairfield from 1954 to 1957 and spent a number of years in sales with Armour and Company. He lived in Beaufort, South Carolina for eleven years and for a time, while there, he operated a ice cream truck business and then served as postal service contractor in Fairfield between 1969 and 1990.
He was a devoted and faithful member of Fairfield United Methodist Church and served as superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. He served as usher for many years and always enjoyed welcoming people into the church.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Fairfield United Methodist Church. Rev. Valerie Ballance will officiate. Burial will follow in Fairfield Cemetery.
Surviving are two brothers, Allen Ballance and Gene Ballance, both of Fairfield; two sisters, Ruth B. Sadler and Joyce B. Jones, both of Fairfield; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clen Labin Ballance and a sister, Cora B. Best.

The brothers and sisters will receive visitors at their respective homes.
Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service where the body will lie in state prior to the funeral.
