George Norman Thompson, 87, long time resident of Main Street in Swan Quarter died Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Cross Creek Health Care Center where he had resided in recent years.
Born in Hyde County, January 11, 1922, he was the son of the late William George and Rosa Williams Thompson. Norman was married to the former Edith Credle for more than 50 years before she preceded him in death. He was retired from the U.S. Navy having served in World War II and the Korean War and served at Pearl Harbor before retiring as Chief Petty Officer. He was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church and the Atlantic Lodge # 294 A. F. &A. M. His special time was spent with his children and grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the family plot in Soule Cemetery. Mike Wheeler, Rev. Julie Gicker-Anderson and Steve Bryan will officiate. The funeral procession will pause briefly at Calvary Presbyterian Church for prayer while enroute to the cemetery for the graveside service.
Surviving are two sons, Norman Allen Thompson of Greenville, Dennis Ray Thompson and wife, Debbie of Swan Quarter; two daughters, Tonie T. Marshall and husband, Sam and Donna T. Spencer and husband, Pat all of Swan Quarter; a sister, Hazel T. Sadler of Swan Quarter; grandchildren, Beth McCall and husband, Chris, Megan Shaw and husband, Byron, Ryan Marshall and wife, Lyla, Mandy Spencer, Barrett Marshall, Brittanie Thompson and Malori Spencer; great-grandsons, Gavin Coughlin and Joseph Coughlin; a special neice, Jaime Spencer.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Alison Thompson; a brother, Curtis Thompson; sisters, Pauline Cahoon and Ernestine Cuthrell.
The family suggests that memorials be sent to Calvary Presbyterian Church, c/o Mona Lou Hopkins, Quarter Road, Swan Quarter, N.C. 27885. Special thanks is extended to the staff of Cross Creek for their special care.
