YEATESVILLE — The Northside girls track and field team made it’s coach proud Wednesday evening by taking the Atlantic and Albemarle Conference Track &Field Meet, held at Northside High School.
The Northside girls totaled 156 points at the meet, beating out second place Williamston by 32 points. The Lady Panthers took all-conference honors in six events.
Northside’s Rebekah Bonney placed first in the discus with a toss of 94 foot 2 inches. Orianna Phillips got first in the high jump with a leap of 4 foot 6 inches. Bernadette Martin earned first in the long jump at 14 foot 3 inches and the 100 meter high hurdles with a time of 18:20. Ashley Clayton got first in the triple jump with a length of 29 foot 8 1/4 inches and the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 50:88.
Williamston finished second overall in the female competition with 124 points.
The Lady Tigers 3200 meter relay team placed first with a time of 12:31.
In the male competition, the Tigers led the way with 93 points. The Williamston boys took all-conference honors in five events.
Williamston’s Eric Cox took first in the discus with a toss of 122 foot 9 inches. Stephen Silverstone placed first in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:12:94 and the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:36. Marquise Staton finished first in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 42:58. The Tigers’ 800 meter relay team took first with a 1:35:64 mark.
The Southside men’s team came in just behind the Tigers with 81 points on the meet. The Seahawks had all-conference honors in a meet-high seven events.
The Seahawks’ 1600 meter relay team took first with a 3:39:19 finish, while the 3200 meter relay team placed first with a time of 9:25:33. Southside’s Leon Arron finished first in the shot put with a distance of 35 foot 10 1/2 inches. Tony Grice had first in the triple jump, with a leap of 41 foot 7 1/4 inches and in the long jump, with a distance of 20 foot 7 inches. Grice also finished first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52:16. Terrance Windley ran for first in the 800 meter run, clocking in at 2:15:91.
Overall, the all-conference winners were spread out pretty evenly between the six schools at the meet — Northside, Southside, Roanoke, Perquimans, Williamston and Camden, according to Woolard.
Now each school’s team has to decide whether to trim its roster heading into North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s Class 1A Mid-East Regional action on May 9 at Pamlico County High School in Bayboro.
Woolard thinks that each school involved in the meet can have a strong showing at the regional. He said some of the athletes he saw competing at the meet have a good chance to go to state.
