Grice, Clayton, Jenkins, Staton are regional champs

Athletes from Washington, Northside, Southside and Williamston will be competing in the state track championships this weekend.
Several turned in top-four performances at their respective regional meets last weekend to earn spots at the state tournament. The Pam Pack competed at the 3-A East Regional meet in Swansboro, while the Northside Panthers, Southside Seahawks and Williamston Tigers participated in the 1-A East Regional meet at Pamlico.
The 1-A state championships will be held Friday, while the 3-A state championships will take place Saturday. Both championships will be held at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro.
WASHINGTON BOYS
Melvin Spruill earned a state-qualifying spot by taking second in the 400-meter dash. Spruill, the lone Washington boy to earn a state spot, was clocked in at 50.74 seconds.
Mike Moore was ninth (43.93) and Michael Godley 12th (43.99) in the 300-meter hurdles.
Moore added a 10th-place finish in the long jump (19-0). Anthony Ward was 15th (11.96 seconds) in the 100-meter dash.
The quartet of Brandon Sulc, Spruill, Raphael Gibbs and Raheam Patterson just missed out on a state spot, finishing fifth in 3:35.77.
The Pack’s 800-relay team of Spruill, William Ellegor, Gibbs and Patterson (1:32.86) took seventh.
Washington’s 400-meter relay foursome of Patterson, Ellegor, Ward and Darius Sneed took 10th in 45.11 seconds. The 3,200-relay team of Dylan Mizelle, Desmond Griffin, Sulc and Gibbs also took 10th with a time of 8:59.13.
WASHINGTON GIRLS
Sharita Grice was crowned regional champion in the discus event, uncorking a heave of 108 feet, 9 inches. Grice is the lone Lady Pam Pack athlete to qualify for the state meet.
Grice was fifth in the shot put (30-11), just missing out on a state-qualifying spot, while TeAmber Burke was eighth (30-3.5)
Christol Carroll was ninth in the discus (83-11).
Washington’s Janel Griffin ran a 52.91, good for 10th place, in the 300-meter preliminaries.
The Pack’s 1,600-meter relay quartet of Elizabeth Tanner, Haley Hiatt, Vantashia Palmer and Jordan Cantrell took eighth with a 4:37.93 clocking.
The Pack’s 400-meter relay team of Akida Spencer, Shiquana Rascoe, Shakillya Williams and Yasmine Horton was 13th (53.72 seconds).
Washington’s 800-relay team of Hiatt, Palmer, Williams and Datisha Redmond was disqualified.
SOUTHSIDE BOYS
Tony Grice was crowned regional champion in the 400-meter dash (51.70) and triple jump (40-9) events. Grice added a third in the long jump (19-9).
Terrence Windley was second in the 800 (2:12.20), while Teon Aaron was third (116-4) in the discus.
The 1,600-meter relay team finished third in 3:40.
SOUTHSIDE GIRLS
Two Seahawks earned state spots for the girls team.
Renihia Hodges captured second, and a state spot, in the 800-meter run (2:41.20).
Tiffany Harrell earned a state spot by taking third in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 1:07.80.
NORTHSIDE BOYS
Kenneth Jenkins soared to regional championships in the high jump (6-4) and long jump (20-1) events.
Rashem Cooper took third in the high jump (5-10), while Bryant Fletcher was third in the 3,200-meter run (11:52).
The 3,200-relay team took fourth in 9:26.80.
NORTHSIDE GIRLS
Ashley Clayton earned a regional championship, taking first in the 300-meter hurdles (50.10). Clayton added a second in the triple jump (30-0) and a third in the 100-meter hurdles (18.0).
Orianna Phillips cleared 4-8 in the high jump, good for second place.
Kayla Cerny also qualified for state in the 300-hurdles, placing third (55.30).
Rebekah Bonney finished with third-place finishes in the shot put (29-8.5) and discus (90-11) events.
Bernadette Martin took fourth (18.30) in the 300-meter hurdles and long jump (13-9.5).
The 3,200-relay team will also be making the trek to state after taking third in 12:32.20.
WILLIAMSTON BOYS
Marquise Staton won a regional title in the 300-meter hurdles (43.70).
Jermaine McGhee was second in the 100-dash in 10.80 seconds.
Darik Cox was fourth (41-1.5) in the shot.
The 800-relay (1:33.80) and 1,600-relay (3:39) teams took second.
WILLIAMSTON GIRLS
Lynn Davis took second in the discus (93-10) and fourth in the shot (29-1) events.
Fourths went to Quashonna Smith in the 200 (27.30) and Jakela Bryant in the 400 (1:11.70).
The 800-meter relay (1:55.90) and 1,600-meter relay (4:54) teams took third, while the 3,200 team (12:41.60) was fourth.
