Must be good genes.
Nearly four decades after her great-grandmother Fannie Spruill Cutler won the award, Washington resident Beth Buckman was named the Daily News’ 2009 Mother of the Year.
How about that?
Buckman must be setting a good example for her daughters Susan and Katherine, so maybe one or both of them will follow in their mom’s footsteps later in life. And just so we don’t leave out her husband Kent and son Wilson, they, too, must be reaping the benefits of Buckman’s selfless devotion.
Buckman won the award based on three separate nomination letters the Daily News received: They were submitted by her coworkers at the Montessori Preschool of Washington — where Buckman is an administrator and teaches art — and by her sister and mother-in-law.
The comments included such laudatory remarks as these from her co-workers: “Not only is Beth very active in her children’s lives and her church, but she also is ‘Mom’ to over 60 students at the Montessori Preschool …”
Of all human endeavors, many would agree that being nurturing, supportive, loving parents is among the most important. Not only does it provide a critical foundation for children, but significantly adds to the peace and well-being of the parents, themselves.
One has only to view Buckman’s smile on the cover of the Daily News’ front page Sunday to glimpse the warmth of her personality.
Congratulations, Beth, and may the coming year provide joy and promise.
