A Northside High School baseball player has been arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon after a recent baseball-throwing incident on a school activity bus, according to a statement from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
Northside student Zachary Jay Boyd, 17, of Biggs Road in Pinetown, is also charged with one count of injury to personal property stemming from the incident.
The thrown baseball allegedly shattered the windshield of a tractor trailer and injured the driver’s face and hands with glass, the statement indicated.
A report made to the sheriff’s office indicated the ball was thrown from an activity bus. The incident, which took place about 11:40 p.m. near Everett’s Crossroads on U.S. Highway 264, did not result in severe injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.
Boyd turned himself in Tuesday, the same day a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was later released on a custody order, the statement indicated.
Last week, a Northside High School student and former member of the school’s baseball team told the Washington Daily News that four baseball players were suspended as a result of the incident and one faced possible expulsion.
School officials would not confirm or deny the suspensions, but announced a day earlier that interim Superintendent William Rivenbark had canceled the remainder of the team’s season and had taken appropriate disciplinary action in the matter.
District officials have refused to say whether Northside Head Baseball Coach Keith Boyd or any other coaches would be disciplined.
School district spokeswoman Sarah Hodges declined to comment on the arrest Tuesday, stating she hadn’t reviewed the sheriff’s office press release.
No one from the sheriff’s office was available for comment Tuesday.
