Mr. Ernest Hertford “E.H.” Bishop, Jr., age 89, a resident of 833 Swindell Road, Pantego died Tuesday May 19, 2009 at his home.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM today, Thursday May 21, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven officiated by Linwood Adams and Reggie Braziel. Burial with military honors will follow in the Yeatesville Cemetery. Tony Griekspoor, Junior Joyner, Marvin Smith, Nelson Wallace, Jr., Hallas Boyd and Jerry Sawyer will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. E.H. was born in Pantego on January 22, 1920, son of the late Ernest H. Bishop, Sr. and the late Betty Elizabeth Judkins Bishop. He was a 1938 graduate of Pantego High School and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He participated in campaigns of Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. Mr. E.H. was wounded in action on July 5, 1944 which awarded him a Silver Star, Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. On December 11, 1944, he was wounded in action again and received Oak Leaf Clusters for his Silver Star, Bronze Star and his Purple Heart. Mr. E.H. married the former Cora Frances Canady on October 4, 1947 who preceded him in death on April 19, 2009. He was a member of New Hope Church of Christ, a charter member of Pantego Ruritan Club, was a former Boy Scout Master, served on the Beaufort County Board of Education and a former member of the Green Sea Hunting Club.
Survivors include three daughters: Maude E. Bishop of Atlantic Beach, Gloria Bishop Williams and her husband Eddie of Raleigh and Mary Bishop Alligood and her husband Tommy of Greenville; five grandchildren: Murphy Ernest Ratcliff and his wife Emily, Jody Elizabeth Ratcliff, Bishop Edward Williams, Madison Jules Alligood and Breanna Bishop Alligood; two great grandchildren: Morgan Marie Ratcliff and Hunter Bishop Ratcliff and a special friend Robbie Rouse and his wife Jane Leigh of Washington. Mr. E.H. was preceded in death by two brothers: William J. Bishop and John Bishop and two sisters: Lessie Harris and Edna Kerr.
The family will receive friends prior to the service 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM Thursday at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven and other times at the home.
