MOCKSVILLE — Mr. Walter Clifton Phipps, Sr., 82, of Greenwood Ave., died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at his home. Mr. Phipps was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Alleghany County to the late Charlie Wayne and Annie Ruth Wooten Phipps. He attended Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Mr. Phipps was retired from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and the Davie County Sheriff’s Office. He was co-owner/operator of Center Exxon in Mocksville. In recent years, he and his wife were owner/operators of Phipps Sewing Center &Farm Toys on Salisbury St. He was a charter member of the Piedmont Antique Power Association and of the Davie County Law Enforcement Association. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Wilma Ruth Hampton Phipps of the home; three daughters, Judy P. (Bill) Lawrence of Scranton, Joyce P. (Joe) Scott of Mocksville and Jayne R. (Randy) Phipps-Boger of Glade Valley; three sons, Jimmy (Sonia) Phipps, Walter (Susan) Phipps, Jr. and Jeffrey K. Phipps, all of Mocksville; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; three sisters, Nell P. (Lyle) Cox of Colfax, Dorothy P. (Dwayne) Jones of Scottville and Doris P. Murphy of Elkin; along with numerous nieces and nephews. The family received friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, at Eaton Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 24, at Shiloh United Methodist Church on Shiloh Church Road in Sparta. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. The family requests that memorials be considered for Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 1173 US Hwy 221, Sparta, NC 28675.
