Joseph Banis, age 85, of 208 Adams St. Plymouth, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Washington County Hospital after a long illness.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, June 21, 2009 at Walker Funeral Home-Horner Chapel. A Rosary Service, conducted by Sr. Arcadia Rivera, will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2009 in the Chapel of Walker Funeral Home-Horner Chapel, Plymouth. Catholic Mass, conducted by Father Douglas Reed, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 22, 2009 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, the family will receive friends immediately following Mass. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Banis was born September 29, 1923 in Jersey City, NJ to the late Michael and Bertha Petro Banis. He spent many happy years in the CCC Camps, and at the age of 16 joined the Merchant Marines, and then at the age of 18 joined the US Navy. He was a World War II veteran of the US Navy, retired from ABC Company in 1984, and a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Wuelfing Banis of the home; one daughter, Gweneth Elyea of Plymouth; one son, Joseph and wife, Krys of Palmer, PA; three grandsons, Michael Kenneth Elyea of Nazareth, PA, Phillip David Elyea of Plymouth, Kurt Banis of Palmer, PA; two granddaughters, Stephanie and Jessica Marie Banis of Palmer, PA; and one great granddaughter, Madyson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
