Mr. John Henry Sullivan, Sr., age 86, a resident of 3333 John Small Avenue, Washington, NC passed away at his home Thursday, June 18, 2009.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2009 at First Baptist Church Washington with Dr. Jimmy Moore and Chaplain Sanford Sears officiating. Burial will follow at Pamlico Memorial Gardens. His six grandchildren, Albert Sullivan Davis, Amanda Sullivan Lovin, Teresa (Teri) Davis Sauls, Donnie Ray Sullivan, Jr., Kevin Clark Sullivan and Ryan Andrew Sullivan will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009 at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Highway 264 East, Washington, NC, and at other times at the home.
Mr. Sullivan was born April 23, 1923 in Wayne County, NC to Needham Andrew and Sarah Lane Sullivan. John graduated from Washington High School in 1943. On July 17, 1945 he married Lucy Rae Boyd of Pinetown, NC. John served his country in the US Army 87th Infantry during WWII European Theatre including the Battle of the Bulge and received the Combat Infantry Badge. He was Assistant Manager for A&P Grocery Stores retiring after 38 years of service. John was a member of First Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon and was a member of the Baraca/Timberlake Sunday School Class. He was also a member of American Legion Post #15 for over 60 years. He spent many hours bird watching, working in his yard, gardening and tending his grape vineyard. He adored spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 64 years he is survived by one daughter, Eva Carol Sullivan Wainwright and husband Stanley of Chocowinity; two sons, Donnie Ray Sullivan, Sr. and wife Gale of Washington, John Henry Sullivan, Jr. of Chattanooga, TN; one sister, Estelle S. Taylor of Fredericksburg, VA; three brothers, Troy D. Sullivan and wife Elizabeth of Ft. Pierce, FL, Bennie Sullivan and wife Mary of Washington, Needham A. Sullivan, Jr. and wife Mavis of Chester, VA; six grandchildren, Albert Sullivan Davis, Teresa (Teri) Davis Sauls, Donnie Ray Sullivan, Jr., Kevin Clark Sullivan, Amanda Sullivan Lovin and Ryan Andrew Sullivan; and three great grandchildren, Katherine (Katie) Ola Davis, Preston Bennett Lovin and Joanna Danielle Sauls.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one great grandchild, Sarah Lane Sauls; one sister, Ruby Sullivan Harris; and two brothers, Marvin Hardy Sullivan and Glen Sullivan.
