Mrs. Barbara Bay Cartwright, age 62, a resident of Bayview, NC passed away on Tuesday June 30, 2009 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer.
A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday July 3, 2009 at Bath Christian Church officiated by Curtis White. Entombment will follow in the Bath Christian Church Columbarium. John Spain, Bertie Cartwright, Kelen Cartwright, Billy Hill, J.C. Morgan and Leon Wingate will serve as pallbearers.
Barbara was born on January 4, 1947 in Washington, NC, daughter of the late Bartley Bay and Mary Pledger Bay who survives. She graduated from Washington High School in 1965. On November 29, 1968, she married Clarence Marion “C.M.” Cartwright III. Barbara worked for many years at National Spinning Company, Flanders Filters Company and at Northside High School. During her tenure at Northside, Barbara attended East Carolina University and completed her degree in history. This degree took her to P.S. Jones Middle School, where she had just completed her third year as a seventh grade social studies teacher, a fulfillment of a long-awaited goal and dream.
Barbara was a member of the Bath Christian Church, where she served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher and choir member for many years. She also led the music for Sunday school and was currently serving as the President of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was a member of the North Carolina Association of Educators and the Heritage Book Club.
Surviving along with her husband C.M. are a son: Clarence Marion “Clay” Cartwright IV his wife Lisa and their daughter Piper, all of Rosewood Drive in Greenville; a daughter: Courtney Megan Cartwright of Bayview; her mother: Mary Bay of Florida; her brother: Jerry Bay and his wife Maureen of St. Petersburg, Florida; her brother-in-law: Rick Cartwright and his wife Louise of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; her brother-in-law: Donald Cartwright of Burbage Cross Roads, Bath; nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous close personal friends. Barbara was preceded in death by her father Bartley Bay in 2006.
The family will receive friends 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday July 2, 2009 at Bath Christian Church and other times at the Cartwright family home in Bayview.
