Mr. Charles T. Gray, age 85, a former resident of 233 East 4th Street, Washington, died Saturday, August 1, 2009 at University Inpatient Hospice, Greenville, NC.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:45 a.m. today at Oakdale Cemetery.
Mr. Gray was born September 8, 1923 in Beaufort County to Jesse Thomas Gray and Neva O’Neal Gray. On November 9, 1951 he married Joan Whichard who preceded him in death on February 20, 2001. Charles served his country during WWII in the Army under Gen. Patton’s 3rd Army. He served the community for 30 years as a fireman with the Washington Fire Department. Charles owned and operated Gray’s Grocery on Harvey Street for many years and worked with Stanadyne as a security guard.
Survivors include, one daughter, Deborah Gray Maroe and husband Joseph of Washington, NC; one son, Tommy Gray of Cary, NC; three grandchildren, Heather Matheney and husband Leland of Hope Mills, NC, Stephanie Miles and fiancé Buddy Holland of Arlington, VA, and Brittany Deans and husband Chris of Washington, NC; and one great grandson, Cody Matheney of Hope Mills, NC.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Zackery Gray and Hitous Gray.
