Mrs. Martha F. Kuehn

Mrs. Martha Emilie Freitag Kuehn, daughter of the late Paul Walter David and Emily Golin Freitag, was born on September 30, 1924 in Hartford, Connecticut and departed this life in Washington, North Carolina to be with her heavenly Father on August 13, 2009.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday August 15, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church and will be conducted by Rev. Darryl Evans. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford, Connecticut.
After graduating from Hartford Junior College for Women in 1944, Martha earned a B.S. degree from Purdue University in 1946. She was then employed as a supervisor in the penicillin laboratory of Merck Pharmaceutical Company until her marriage, on May 16, 1953, to Charles A. Kuehn who survives. They moved in 1968 to Greenville, North Carolina and in 1974 to Washington, North Carolina. She remained quite active in volunteer work for the Service League of Greenville, the Beaufort County Medical Center, the public school system’s Angel programs, Beaufort County Blind Center, and the Meal’s-On-Wheels program all in Washington, North Carolina. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Washington Yacht and Country Club, and Washington Garden Club. Martha also served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Brown Library. Her favorite pastimes were knitting and playing bridge.
Besides her husband, she leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Jr. and Cynthia Kuehn of Wixom, Michigan; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Thomas Swanner, Jr. of Washington, NC; and four grandsons, Charles Kuehn, III of East Lansing MI, Paul Kuehn of Wixom, MI, and Zachary and Jeffrey Swanner of Washington, NC. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Freitag and Walter Freitag and a sister, Helene Fogg.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday August 14, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and other times at the home, 203 Alderson Rd. Washington.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 211 W. 2nd St., Washington, NC 27889.
