Mrs. Louise Jones Gurkin, age 100, a long time resident of West Main Street, Washington, NC died Wednesday August 19, 2009 at Britthaven of Wilson.
A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday August 21, 2009 at Oakdale Cemetery of Washington. The family will receive friends following the graveside service.
Mrs. Gurkin was born in Anderson, South Carolina on May 18, 1909 daughter of the late Alonzo McGlemerie and Rose Garrison Jones. She was a graduate of Winthrop University, the University of Virginia and East Carolina University. In 1939, Mrs. Gurkin married William Hinton Gurkin, who preceded her in death in 1981. Mrs. Gurkin taught English and Latin at Washington High School for 21 years retiring in 1974. Mrs. Gurkin was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Washington, where she was active in the Presbyterian Women, serving as Secretary of the Presbyterian Synodical of N.C., was a teacher of the Adult Bible Class and was awarded a life membership by the women of the church in 1973. Mrs. Gurkin had been a resident of Spring Arbor Assisted living in Wilson since December 2004, when she moved from Washington.
Mrs. Gurkin is survived by: one son, James Clarke Gurkin and wife Paula Swain Gurkin of Wilson, two granddaughters; Michelle G. Castillo and husband John of Raleigh, and Candice G. Woolard and husband Leslie III “Skeet” of Rocky Mount, a close nephew; Dick Gurkin of Wilson and four great-grandchildren; Sara, Tyler, Nathan and Sydnee. Other survivors include four nieces, three nephews and twelve great nieces and nephews.
