Rev. Wayne Esmond Thomas, age 78, a resident of 4170 VOA Road, Washington, NC died Wednesday August 19, 2009 at his home.
A graveside funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday August 22, 2009 at Oakdale Cemetery officiated by Rev. Dennis Adams, Rev. Joyce Day and Rev. Harold Hendren.
Rev. Thomas was born in Manatee, FL on February 7, 1931 son of the late James Lee Thomas and the late Ruthie Clark Thomas. He was a 1951 graduate of Nakomis High School and earned his Bachelor Degree at Florida Southern College. Rev. Thomas married the former Nancy Kerner Pitzer on May 23, 1964 who survives. After his education in Florida he served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon Completion of his military service he studied and received his Divinity Degree at Asbury Seminary in Wilmore Kentucky. After receiving ministerial credentials Rev. Thomas served thirteen years in the Florida Conference. He then moved to North Carolina Conference where he served in Newton Grove, Marshalburg, Bolivia, Roland, Beaufort and Stella before serving in the Beaufort County area where he served at Wares Chapel United Methodist Church and Wharton Trinity United Methodist Church. He attended St. James United Methodist Church in Greenville.
Surviving along with Rev. Thomas’ wife Nancy of the home are two sons: Charles P. Thomas of Washington and David W. Thomas of Greenville.
The family will receive friends at the home located at 4170 VOA Road, Washington, NC. Rev. Thomas was preceded in death by his step-father Frank Donaldson.
