“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
On Friday, August 21, 2009, our mother, Betty Harrison Jones Avery, of 1017 Cheyenne Court, Apt. 119, Greenville, passed away after a two year battle of cancer.
She was born on November 8, 1931 in Jones County, N.C. to the late Elijah and Kate Stalling Jones. Our father, Lathan Richard Avery, preceded her in death on April 12, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, James and William Jones, both of Lenoir County and her sister, Mildred Jones.
She is survived by her three children, Debby Hodges and her husband, Mike, Kathy Pruitt and her husband, Tommy all of Greenville; Curtis Avery and his wife, Carolyn of Grimesland; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
Our mother was a member of Alligood Church of God. For many years, she was active in the women’s prison ministries in Beaufort and Pitt counties. She participated in many good causes, including The Children’s Miracle Network, Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Child Shoeboxes, selling Tootsie Rolls for the blind, and ringing the bell at Christmas with her grandson, Garrett, for the Salvation Army.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved serving others. Especially, she was thankful to those who looked out for her during her illness, including her oncology doctor, Heather White and her assistant, Maria Martinez. We would like to thank those at University Hospice who cared our mother including Karen, Kim, Donna, Alley, Nikki and Lisa. Your care for us and our mother will not be forgotten.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, August 24, 2009 at Alligood Church of God, Mill Hole Road, Washington, conducted by pastor Phillip Jethro. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington.
Her grandsons, Chip Jones, Chris Avery, Greg Hodges, Garrett Hodges, and her grand daughters’ husbands, Anthony Bowers and Kevin Brickhouse, will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, August 23, 2009 at Alligood Church of God and other times at the home of her son, Curtis Avery, 5924 Elks Road, Grimesland.
Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Alligood Church of God Missionary Fund, 2428 Terrapin Track Road, Washington, N.C. 27889.
