Ira Herbert Hoell, Jr.

Ira Herbert Hoell, Jr. passed away on August 24, 2009 at the Beaufort County Hospital in Washington, N.C. He was 59. Herbert is survived by his wife of 26 years, Julie Capel Hoell, and two children; daughter Julianne Capel Hoell and son Ira Herbert (“H”) Hoell, III.
A graveside service will be held at Oakdale Cemetery on Tuesday, August 25 at 4 p.m.
Herbert was born in Washington, NC on August 26, 1949, the son of Mildred White Hoell and Ira Herbert Hoell, Sr. He has one sister, Ada Ellen Hoell Smith, who resides with her husband David in Gastonia. He has a half-sister, Cartheine Furlow of Deerborn, Michigan.
He graduated from the Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ in 1968, and from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1972. He was a member of Zeta Psi fraternity and the Gorgon’s Head Lodge, and was an active alumnus throughout his lifetime.
Herbert served on the staff of the Watergate Committee, chaired by Senator Sam Ervin in 1973-74 in Washington, D.C. He was the Chairman of the Forestland Group, LLC. He served on the Board of Visitors for the Lineberger Cancer Center in Chapel Hill and the Board of Visitors for St. Mary’s School in Raleigh, N.C.
He was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Washington, N.C.
Herbert and his family lived in Washington until moving to Chapel Hill in 1997. He was an avid boat enthusiast, having spent much of his life on the Pamlico River. He loved boating, sailing, fishing and simply being on the water. His family was his greatest source of pride and brought him the most joy throughout his life. He leaves behind a multitude of friends who will deeply miss his kind heart, great wit, gentle spirit, and wholehearted gift for mischief.
The family will receive friends at their Summerhaven home in Washington following the graveside ceremony.
