CRESWELL — The Southside Seahawks put up a good fight, but fell 28-22 to the Creswell Tigers on Friday night.
Creswell (2-0) held a 28-14 lead when Willie Ruffin returned an interception 105 yards for Southside (0-2), making it 28-22.
The Seahawks had a goal-line stand and took over at their own 1-yard line with 90 seconds to play. Southside got to the Creswell 20 before time ran out.
“We played hard and fought from the beginning,” Southside coach David Hines said. “We showed a lot of improvement. We still need to work on our tackling, but we’re getting better.”
Southside was hoping to win for former assistant coach Jeremy Jones, who lost his four-month old baby on Tuesday.
“The kids wanted to win for coach Jones,” Hines said. “They’re disappointed they couldn’t. Coach Jones called us right after the game and said he was proud of them for giving it their all, which is all you can ask.”
Southside plays host to Pamlico next Friday night.
Creswell will pay at visit to Mattamuskeet.
