Joseph Garnett Murphree, 89, of Carriage Club Dr., Mooresville, NC, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2009, at Genesis Eldercare, Mooresville, NC. Born May 9, 1920, in Pickens County, SC, he was the son of the late Joseph Ralph and Ola Floree Rampey Murphree. Mr. Murphree was a retired supervisor for Winn-Dixie Stores having 42 years of service. He was a WWII veteran having served in the US Army. Mr. Murphree was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Mooresville, NC, and former member of Union United Methodist Church, Irmo, SC, for 37 years. Over the years, he served faithfully in many positions of the church. He was a member of the Walden Masonic Lodge, Greenville, SC, for over 60 years. Mr. Murphree was preceded in death by his first wife, Jo Beth Jones Murphree. He is survived by his second wife, Miriam Hinson Murphree, whom he married March 29, 1959; son, Rev. Gary C. Murphree, Sr. and wife, Sarah, of Washington, NC; daughter, Mary Murphree Easter and husband, Lee, of Mooresville, NC; sister, Creola M. Cantrell and husband, Isaac, of Easley, SC; and grandchildren, Gary C. Murphree, Jr., Mary Ann Murphree, Jo Beth Murphree DeVore, Justin Easter and Elizabeth Easter. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at the Woodlawn Memorial Park Remembrance Chapel, Greenville, SC, with Rev. Dr. Robert W. Wiseman officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church, 7582 Woodrow St., Irmo, SC, 29063 and/or Central United Methodist Church, 214 N. Academy St., Mooresville, NC 28115. Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville, is serving the family of Mr. Murphree.
