Bartow, FL — Mrs. Dorothy Marie Long Quinn, age 87, a resident of Bartow for 20 years, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2009 from respiratory failure at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale.
Dorothy was born on August 18, 1922 in Norfolk, VA, daughter of the late James Mendall Long and Ruby Marie Hopkins. She graduated with honors from Englehard High School and was the class Valedictorian, Class of 1939. Dorothy, after being away from school for 32 years, decided to earn her BA degree. In 1971, she was awarded a BA from Florida Technological University (now U.C.F) in Orlando, followed by her M.A. degree from Stetson University in Deland in 1975. She was a certified teacher of Social Studies.
Dorothy, throughout her years, was active in the Democratic National Party. She attended the Catholic church and was a devout Christian. Unfortunately, from a spider bite in 1981 while living in the Florida Keys, she became increasingly disabled but continually cared for her by husband, William Quinn, Jr.. Dorothy and Bill traveled extensively visiting, Africa, Spain, Greece, Italy, and especially Israel on numerous occasions to see the Holyland. They supported various caregiving agencies in Mexico and Honduras, with again numerous trips to these countries. Even with her disability, Dorothy maintained a strong will to reach out to others less fortunate than herself.
Mrs. Quinn was preceded in death by her husband William R. Quinn, Jr. on August 17, 2009, who she married on November 27, 1944; parents; son Michael Long Quinn; brothers Mendall Long, Jack Long formerly of Bartow, FL, George Long, and sisters; Nena Barrett, June Liverman, and Elizabeth Potts. She is survived by her remaining son William “Billy” Quinn, III, and wife Marjorie, grandchildren; Matthew James Quinn, Michelle Barnes, Danelle Cubria, Claire Grace Quinn, Shenne Mae Quinn, and great grandchildren Charley Barnes and Dixie Quinn Barnes.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 3rd at 3:30 p.m. at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, 650 East Main Street in Bartow. Interment will follow at Wildwood Cemetery in Bartow.
