GOLDSBORO — Two special teams miscues spelled disaster for Washington in a 26-14 loss at the hands of Goldsboro High School on Friday night.
The Cougars covered a pair of blocked punts for touchdowns and countered a productive night by the Pam Pack offense.
“We had some opportunities and we did not take advantage,” WHS head coach Sport Sawyer said. “We had a few mental letdowns and a few costly penalties and you can’t win when you do things like that.”
Despite the erratic play throughout, the Pam Pack did have a chance to win in the fourth quarter.
Trailing 20-14, Washington gained possession at the Goldsboro 43-yard line with 11 minutes on the clock and proceeded to drive the ball into the red zone. On second and ten from the 12-yard line, quarterback Tony Turnage pitched the ball to Lindsey Harris, who raced around the right end and across the goal line.
The would-be touchdown was immediately called back by a holding penalty.
Three subsequent pass attempts fell incomplete and the Pam Pack turned the ball over on downs.
Goldsboro sealed the win with two minutes and 49 seconds remaining when Andre Montgomery broke a 43-yard scoring run.
“Washington has a good ball team and we dodged a lot of bullets,” said Goldsboro head coach Eric Reid. “We needed this win at home and we made enough plays to get it done.”
On the night the Pam Pack out-gained the Cougars 293-177 in total offense.
Turnage led the Washington offense with 143 yards on nine completions. The senior attempted 24 passes on the night.
“That is not necessarily what we wanted to do coming in,” said Sawyer. “But we did a pretty good job blocking, and we had to try some things because we were behind.”
Harris led the Pam Pack rushing attack with 58 yards on 12 carries. Kaschief Foreman tallied 54 yards on 16 totes. Foreman led the team with seven catches for 83 yards.
Washington amassed 90 yards worth of penalties and committed three turnovers.
The Pam Pack (2-2 overall) will look to get back on track next week when they take on Jacksonville.
