Estelle Cahoon Gurganus, age 89, a resident of 250 Lovers Lane, Washington, died Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Britthaven of Washington.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at Oakdale Cemetery with Rev. Bobby Woolard officiating. Frank Williams, Jr., Walter Cahoon, III, Boomer Gurganus, Michael Harding, Eddie Respess, Eddie Respess, Jr., Jason Soper, John Soper, and Sherman Cahoon, Jr. will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 12 to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Highway 264 East, Washington, NC.
Mrs. Gurganus was born in Beaufort County on August 21, 1920 to Henry Stanley and Maggie Estella Gurganus who preceded her in death. On January 6, 1949 she married Jay Mack Gurganus who preceded her in death. Estelle retired in 1985 from Hamilton Beach after 20 years of service. She loved spending time with her family, working in her flower garden, fishing and her church. Estelle was a member of Bath Church of God.
She is survived by one son, Jay Gurganus, Jr. and wife Lucy of Washington; two daughters, Liddie Terry and husband Robert of Washington and Joyce Williams and husband Frank of Washington; one brother, Bill Cahoon of Washington; one sister, Fannie Sutton of Elizabeth City; eight grandchildren, Eddie Respess, Wanda Cahoon, Michelle Soper, Linda Williams, Frank Williams, Jr. Jesse Buck, Jay Gurganus, III and Tracy Gurganus and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Respess and two brothers, Edward and James Cahoon.
