Mrs. Frances Elizabeth Bowers Betsy Litchfield died October 6, 2009 at her home with her family at her bedside.
A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held 11 a.m., October 8, 2009 at St. Peters Episcopal Church with The Reverend Kevin Johnson officiating. A private burial will follow the service.
Betsy was born on July 13, 1920 in Washington, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Franklin Bowers. She attended Washington Schools, graduating from high school in 1938. Betsy attended college at Arlington Hall in Arlington, VA. She returned to Washington and worked as a secretary for her father and brothers at Bowers Insurance Agency. She was also employed by the Washington Finance Company. Betsy was a member of the Spinsters Club, the Crescite Book Club and was a life-long member of St. Peters Episcopal Church where she served as a member of the Altar Guild.
On November 30, 1946 Betsy married Thompson Dumont Litchfield of Aurora, NC. She is survived by her husband, her sons: Thompson Dumont Litchfield, Jr. and wife Martha Ann and William Franklin Litchfield and wife Patricia Ann; six grandchildren; one step-grandchild and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers: Charles Tayloe Bowers and Jarl Ellis Bowers and her sisters: Margaret Alston Bowers and Lucy Tayloe Bowers Johnston.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday October 7, 2009 at the Litchfield home, 135 Harbor Road at Riverside. Flowers are welcome, however memorials may be made to St. Peters Building Fund, 101 N. Bonner St. Washington, NC 27889 or the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, 1209 Brown Street, Washington, NC 27889.
