Dr. James J.T. Thurman Wright, Sr., age 90, a resident of 970 Latham St., Belhaven, died at his home Monday, October 12, 2009.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, October 16, 2009 at the First Christian Church of Belhaven and will be conducted by Rev. Roland Jones. Georgie Baker, Ricky Radcliffe, Gilbert Radcliffe, Jeff Credle, Richard Credle and Cliff Fleming will serve as pallbearers. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the Wright Family Cemetery, 541 N. Sandy Hook Rd., Shawboro, NC 27973.
Dr. Wright was born in Camden County on May 20, 1919 to the late Silas Gregory Wright and Ina Williams Wright. In 1935, at the age of 15, he became a graduate of South Mills High School. He attended Wake Forest College of Academics for 4 years. He then went on to attend Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA where he received his Doctorate in Medicine. On August 8, 1944 he married Lola Lee Bennett who survives. He served as a surgeon in the United States Army in Texas and Europe until the end of WWII. He then returned to the Norfolk Army Base in 1946 where he was honorably discharged. He lived in Bailey, NC for one year and in 1948 he moved to Belhaven due to plans to build a hospital, where he would practice medicine until his retirement. Dr. Wright served Belhaven and the surrounding areas not only as a knowledgeable doctor and surgeon, but also as a friend to many.
Survivors include one daughter: Janet Wright Grimes and husband Dr. Larry R. Grimes of Raleigh, one son: James T. Wright, Jr. and wife Phyllis W. Wright of Shawboro, NC, four granddaughters: Lydia Trollo and Rebecca Trollo both of Raleigh, Naomi L. Wright of Leland and Jessica L. Wright of Greenville, one grandson: Hartley R. Grimes of Raleigh and two great grandchildren: Michael and Tavish. Dr. Wright was preceded in death by his brother Luke Wright.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service Friday, October 16, 2009 at the First Christian Church of Belhaven and other times at the home.
