An apparent domestic incident involving a gun and a car sent one person to the hospital Tuesday night.
At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Washington police responded to a reported shooting at the corner of Havens and East Fourth streets.
At least three people were involved in a confrontation in which a car and a firearm were used, police Lt. William Chrismon related Wednesday.
It was unclear whether the victim was shot, but Chrismon said the person was struck by a car.
“There was some involvement with a car,” he said.
The victim was transported to Beaufort County Medical Center. Later, the victim was transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Chrismon said.
The victim was in stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon, the lieutenant reported.
Chrismon declined to release additional details, citing an ongoing investigation.
Three bystanders at the scene declined to comment Tuesday night.
Just a couple of blocks away from the scene, a youth ball game was under way at Kugler Field. Chrismon said it was unlikely that anyone at the field heard the one shot that was fired.
“It was very isolated near that one intersection in that one-minute time frame,” he said.
Patrons of nearby Backwater Jack’s Tiki Bar &Grill on East Main Street evidently weren’t disturbed by the fracas.
“We didn’t hear anything because I’m sure (police) would have talked to us otherwise,” said Laura Scoble, co-owner of the establishment.
Havens Street is normally very quiet, said Scoble, who referenced the ongoing replacement of the N.C. Highway 32 bridge to Washington Park.
“The biggest activity we have going on is watching the bridge being rebuilt,” she said. “But it’s usually extremely quiet.”
