The Deplorable Folly Players of Washington entertained curious children and adults alike Friday night in the first performances of “A Wedding to Die For,” a short comedy featured in this year’s Monsters on Main celebration.
The show, which takes place on the lawn of 520 East Main Street, wraps up tonight with performances at 7, 7:30, 8, 8:30 and 9 p.m. Monsters on Main is free and open to children of all ages.
In a 10 minute-plus performance of “A Wedding to Die For” on Friday night, Dr. Tad Avuncular (actor Jonathan Clayborne), king of the goblins, joined his wife, the Disney villain Maleficent (actress Riley Potts Simpson) in unholy matrimony. The morbid marriage, which Maleficent told the show’s audience will last thousands of years, was performed by the Sinister Minister.
Dr. Avuncular and Maleficent spar throughout the show like any happily-married couple and drop clever pop-culture references about politicians and talk-show host Larry King.
Maleficent kept an audience of about 10 involved in the show by asking random rhetorical questions of them.
After the show, the monsters danced to popular Halloween-themed songs, including “Thriller” by Michael Jackson.
The performance was set in a ghoulish graveyard with elaborate decorations such as a wedding dinner spread, skeleton bones and grave stones.
“The smiles of the adults or that look of uncertainty from the children … it’s amazing to see in their eyes the question of, ‘Should I be scared or is this really intriguing to see?’” Crystal Holman, an actor in the show, told the Daily News in a previous article. “To me, that is what this is all about: entertainment.”
The players have started a Monsters on Main fan page on Facebook, and the group encourages traffic from users of that social-networking site.
