Haywood caps off record-setting career|Cantrell has sparkling college basketball debut

Bryan Haywood finished up his stellar football career with the North Carolina Wesleyan Bishops on Saturday.
Haywood, Wesleyan’s all-time leading rusher, ran for 45 yards on nine carries in a 55-23 loss to Wesley College in a Division III first-round playoff game. The senior, a former star at Southside High School, also had four receptions for 29 yards for the Bishops (8-3).
Haywood, who earned USA South Conference First Team accolades this year, finished his senior season with 1,045 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 155 carries.
He added 23 receptions, one going for a score, for 283 yards. Haywood also had one kickoff return for 24 yards.
Haywood set numerous records in his college career.
He holds the all-time career rushing record with 2,744 yards, along with the career rushing attempts record (412).
Haywood’s 1,045 rushing yards is a single-season record.
The 203-yard effort Haywood produced in a 42-32 win over Methodist earlier this year is a single-game record. Haywood scored three rushing touchdowns in the game, which tied a single-game mark.
Haywood’s 38 career rushing touchdowns and his 15 touchdowns this season are both Wesleyan records.
His 96-yard scoring jaunt in a 35-13 win over Greensboro College is also a record.
His 3,011 all-purpose yards is a career record.
Haywood’s 258 career points is a school record, while the 96 points he produced this year tied a single-season record.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
C.J. WILSON
C.J. Wilson, the Conference USA Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, had five tackles for the East Carolina Pirates in Saturday’s 37-21 win over UAB.
Wilson, a former star at Northside High School, has 50 tackles, including 9.5 tackles-for-loss (38 yards), 5.5 sacks (19 yards in loss), eight quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery this season.
In his career, Wilson has 27 sacks, 44.5 tackles-for-loss, 29 quarterback hurries and 185 tackles.
The Pirates (7-4, 6-1 C-USA) play host to Southern Miss in a 1:30 p.m. game Saturday.
CHASE TRIPP
Chase Tripp had one tackle for the Winston-Salem Rams in Saturday’s 28-21 loss to Norfolk State.
The freshman defensive lineman, a former standout with the Washington Pam Pack, had five tackles and one pass break-up this season for the Rams (1-10).
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
JORDAN CANTRELL
Jordan Cantrell had a solid college debut with the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets, coming in the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Classic.
The freshman, a former standout player at Washington High School and Terra Ceia, scored 9 points to go with four rebounds, two assists and a steal in Friday's season-opening 77-51 win over Greensboro.
Cantrell then had 6 points, four rebounds and an assist in Saturday's 74-50 win over Methodist.
SAMANTHA SMITH
Samantha Smith, a former star at Washington High School, is playing at Tallahassee Community College.
Smith is averaging 2.0 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.
HUNTER JOHNSON
Hunter Johnson, a former star at Pungo, is a captain for the Meredith Avenging Angels.
Johnson is averaging 10.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
STEPHANIE HOLTON
Stephanie Holton, a former star at Columbia High School, is playing at Shenandoah.
The Hornets were scheduled to tip off their season this weekend.
COR-J COX
Cor-J Cox, a former standout at Washington High School, had 11 points, four assists and three rebounds for Mississippi Valley State in a 102-56 win over Champion Baptist.
Cox is averaging 6.7 points per game.
BRADLEY VAN STAALDUINEN
Bradley Van Staalduinen, a former star at Terra Ceia, is playing at Wingate.
Van Staalduinen had two points and a block in an 89-88 loss to Queens College. He is averaging 5.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.
COLLEGE WRESTLING
Gabe Gardner and Darien Peele, former standouts at Washington High School, are wrestling at Campbell University.
DAMIEN WILKINS
Damien Wilkins, a Washington native, is playing with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Wilkins is averaging 2.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.6 steals per game.
OVERSEAS BASKETBALL
ELTON COFFIELD
Elton Coffield, a former standout at Williamston High School, is playing for the BSW Sixers in Germany.
Coffield is averaging 20.6 points per game.
JOSEPH BARBER
Joseph Barber, a former standout at Terra Ceia, is playing for CS Energia Rovinari in Romania. He had 20 points and seven rebounds in his most recent game.
Barber is averaging 11.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.0 steals per game.

Ralph Biggs, a former star at Washington High school, is playing for Krasnie Krilya Samara in Russia.
Biggs is averaging 4.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.6 assists per game.
