Mr. Allen Holland Bateman, age 84, a resident of 4956 Cherry Road, Washington, died Thursday, December 10, 2009 at Britthaven of Washington.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, December 13, 2009 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, conducted by Rev. Steven Pipho. Burial will military honors will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington.
The following will serve as pallbearers: Sam Bateman, Parker Bateman, Gene Brickhouse and Johnny Patterson.
Mr. Bateman was born in Washington County on October 15, 1925. He was the son of the late Robert Midgette Bateman and Margaret Dean Simpson Bateman. Mr. Bateman graduated from Bath High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He participated in action against the enemy at Iwo Jima and was awarded two Purple Hearts. After serving his country, Mr. Bateman attended East Carolina Teachers’ College (now ECU) and later returned to Beaufort County to farm the family farm.
On November 18, 1953, Mr. Bateman married the former Julia Rebecca “Becky” Elks, who survives.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Allen Holland Bateman, Jr. and wife, Carlene Bateman of Greenville, James Parker Bateman and wife, Jane Bateman of Washington; a daughter, Bettye Bateman of Washington; a sister, Sybil Pipho of Gaston Lake; six grandchildren, Sarah Bateman Whitfield, Mary Bateman Moon, Samuel Bateman, Rachel Bateman, Meredith Bateman Locklear, Parker Bateman; and seven great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Bateman was preceded in death by four brothers, Judson Bateman, Robert Bateman, Daniel Bateman, Billie Bateman; and three sisters, Nannie Maude Bateman, Emily Brickhouse, and Lillie Patterson.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home, Washington and other times at the home of his son, Jim Bateman, 209 Thomas Place, Smallwood, Washington.
