WILLIAMSTON — Florence Estelle Whitehurst Willard, 93, died Saturday, December 12, 2009 at the Vintage Inn Retirement Center. The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Tom Goebel and Rev. Jim Bussell officiating; burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Willard was born in Pitt County on December 17, 1915. She was the daughter of the late Jesse Samuel and Laura Frances Thomas Whitehurst. She was co-owner of the Willard Shoe Shop and a member of the First Christian Church.
On March 23, 1933 she married Otho (O.L.) Lawrence Willard who preceded her in death on January 21, 1993. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Martha Rogers, Laura Frances Hart, Gladys Whitehurst and Bessie Armese; brothers, Joseph Benjamin “Jack,” Thomas Henry and Jessie Whitehurst.
Survivors are daughters, Maeana W. Johnson and Linda W. Brown, both of Williamston; grandchildren, Mike Brown of Currituck, David Brown of Castle Hayne, Gary Johnson of Sneads Ferry and Danny Johnson of Williamston; great-grandchildren, Gary Johnson Jr. of Sneads Ferry, Kayleigh Brown of Currituck and Willard Johnson of Williamston.
The family received friends Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Biggs Funeral Home &other times at residence of Maeana Johnson, 306 E. Vance St. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or the Williamston Rescue Squad.
