German L. Johnson of 1217 N. Washington Street, Washington, NC died Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at Ridgewood Manor.
Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Spring Garden Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. ER McNair officiating. Burial will follow in Bond Family Cemetery, Windsor, NC.
Johnson was born to the late Tinkey and Tressie Watkins Johnson in Brunswick County. He attended Brunswick County Schools. He graduated from North Carolina A &T State University where he received both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees. He did further study at East Carolina University.
His services to the community included: Teacher, Asst. Principal, Driver Education Instructor, Director of ESEA Title I of Federal Programs, and interim Supt. in the Washington City Schools for Jasper L. Lewis during his sudden illness and recovery. He retired from the Washington City Schools in 1984 to a life of fishing, hunting and enjoying a relaxed life. He was a member of Cedar Hill Baptist Church.
Johnsons professional and fraternal affiliations were: Member of Industrial Technology Association, Member of the National Education Association, Vice-Chair of Washington Housing Authority, North Carolina School Personnel Association, North Carolina Principals Association, Hiram Lodge No. 11 and Compensatory Education Association (member of the Dismal Swamp Mafia).
Survivors: his wife, Hattie of the home; two sons: Gerard (Marilyn), Gilbert, Arizona and Tyrone (Agnes), Raleigh, NC; 4 grandchildren: Lynita, Tyrone, Chelsea and Jason; 3 sisters: Almeta Sumpter and Ronell Waddell, both of Wilmington, NC and Grace Hewett, Supply, NC. A loving sister-in-law: Sadie Bond of New Bern, NC; brother-in-law: Leroy Chambers, New York, NY.
The family will receive friends at the home.
