Mildred Ayers House, 94, of 802 Green Street, Columbia, NC, died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at the home of her son. She had experienced a decline in health for the last six months.
Mrs. House was born on May 25, 1915 in Bear Grass, Martin County, North Carolina and was the daughter of the late Elder A.B. Ayers Sr. and the late Lavinia Jones Ayers. She lived the majority of her life in Martin County, NC. After graduation from Robersonville High School, she married the late Berry Lester House on March 15, 1932 and became a homemaker who devoted all of her life to her children, her family and her church. She faithfully attended and supported the Bear Grass Primitive Baptist Church throughout her life.
After the death of Berry House on July 13, 1961, she took refresher courses in typing and bookkeeping and subsequently was hired as bookkeeper at Robersonville Township Hospital until it closed and then at Martin General Hospital in Williamston, NC, until she retired on Sept. 4, 1979. On Sept. 9, 1979, she married Jasper W. House and moved to Plymouth, NC. Jasper later died on April 19, 1996. She continued to live in Plymouth until October, 2006 when she moved to Columbia.
Mrs. House was predeceased by her parents; both husbands; sister Selma Rawls Wallace; brother A.B. Ayers, Jr.; half sister Elsie Bailey; half brother Hubert Harris; son-in-law Bobby Snyder; granddaughter Alison House White and step daughter Anne Landing.
She is survived by three sons: Berry House and wife Lila of Richmond, VA, Philip House, Sr. and wife Nancy of Columbia, NC, and Abner House and wife Virginia of Robersonville, NC, and a daughter, Phyllis H. Stroud and husband Elton of Danville, VA.
Surviving grandchildren are Donison House of Norfolk, VA, Sherry House of Huntsville, AL; Lester Snyder and wife Marquita of Danville, VA; Philip House, Jr. and wife Terri of Portland, TN; Helen Craddock and husband Ralph of Manns Harbor, NC; Blaine House and Meredith House of Raleigh, NC; Leigh-Anna House of Greensboro, NC; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three step children: Dr. Frank Landing and wife Carolyn of Jamestown, NC; Jack House and wife Dot, and Jacqueline Carawan and husband Jesse both of Plymouth, NC; seven step grandchildren and several step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at Biggs Funeral Home, 302 W. Main Street, Williamston, NC Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at 2 p.m. by Elder Garlon Vick and Elder Harold Pittman with burial in Robersonville Cemetery. Family received friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Biggs Funeral Home in Williamston, NC.
