Pam Pack swimmers shine at tourney|Pake voted coach of the year

NEW BERN The Washington Pam Pack continues to make waves in the pool. The boys team won the Coastal Conference championship, the girls team finished runner-up and Spencer Pake was tabbed Coach of the Year.
I am very proud of everyone on the team, Pake said after Wednesdays impressive performance. I have asked a lot of them all season long and they have stepped up to the plate and grown into a championship caliber team.
We are going to celebrate this win, but we have to stay focused with regionals coming up on Feb. 6.
Washingtons boys finished with 134.5 points. The Pack was followed West Carteret (116), Havelock (87.5), D.H. Conley (71), South Central (50.5) and White Oak (40.5)
Brandon Niederhauser captured conference titles in the 100 free (49.84 seconds) and 50 free (22.61).
Charles Pfeiffer took first in the 500 freestyle, doing so in a new school-record time of 5:25.47.
The 200 free relay team of Niederhauser, York Winstead, James Martin and Will Davis also won a championship, finishing in 1:40.91.
The 400 free relay quartet of Niederhauser, Pfeiffer, Winstead and Luke Harris took second in a new school-record time of 3:39.51.
The 200 medley team of Pfeiffer, Davis, York Winstead and Luke Winstead also took second (1:55.36).
Adding individual runner-up finishes were Pfeiffer in the 200 individual medley (2:17.82), York Winstead in the 100 butterfly (1:02.82) and Davis in the 100 breast stroke (1:09.65).
Davis added a third in the 200 freestyle (2:06.20).
Harris took fifth in the 200 and 100 freestyle events, Colin Daw captured fifth in the 100 back stroke (1:15.27) and the 200 free relay team of Daw, Mathew Recko, Chris Birdson and Coleman Smithwick took fourth (1:48.90).
Washingtons girls finished with 120 points, 18 points behind Coastal champion South Central (120). Havelock was third with 91 points, followed by D.H. Conley (79), West Carteret (49) and White Oak (31).
Three different girls came home with individual conference championships. Emily Pfeiffer placed first in the 200 individual medley (2:20.54) and 100 breast stroke (1:11.03). Shannon Niederhauser captured top honors in the 50 freestyle (27.98). Riziki Omonde took first in the 100 freestyle (56.95).
Kaitlyn Richards finished second in the 500 freestyle (5:59.68).
Richards also took third in the 200 freestyle (2:16.46), Omonde finished third in the 100 back stroke (1:07.32) and Michaela Daniels was third in the 100 breast stroke (1:21.72).
Earning fourths were Niederhauser in the 100 freestyle (1:05.35) and Jessie Howard in the 500 freestyle (6:24.19).
Three relay teams earned runner-up finishes. Taking second were the 200 medley team of Omonde, Richards, Pfeiffer and Niederhauser (2:04.04), the 200 free relay foursome of Niederhauser, Pfeiffer, Daniels and Howard (1:56.32) and the 400 free relay group of Omonde, Richards, Howard and Daniels (4:17.48).
