Dr. Gedalia Snow Rowe, 70, of 107 Riverview Drive, Washington, died Friday morning January 29, 2010 at Beaufort County Medical Center.
Known to friends as Gila, Dr. Rowe was born Sept. 6, 1939, the only child of the late Rose and Adolph Snow of San Francisco, CA. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Kenneth Snow Rowe of Washington, and their two adult children, Jonathan Rowe of Poulsbo, WA, and Elana Rowe of Southern California. Other survivors include her daughter in law, Andrea Rowe, and grandson, Ari Rowe, both of Poulsbo.
Dr. Rowe held masters degrees and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley and Brandeis University. Her research specialty was in Ancient Near Eastern Poetry and she was proficient in several languages, including Aramaic, Sanskrit and Hebrew. She had been a member of Kibbutz Saad in Israel, near the Gaza Strip. Her careers spanned teaching at the junior high school, junior college and college levels, primarily in New England. She also worked as a programmer, systems analyst and data security director for several companies, including American Express.
Gila was a member of Kol Haskalah, a secular Humanistic Jewish Congregation, in Durham. Interment was held Sunday January 31, 2010 at Eternal Home Cemetery, Colma, CA, with Madrikah Lois Alpern of the Society for Humanistic Judaism officiating. A celebration of life event will be held for friends in Washington on Sept. 6, 2010; and a similar event is planned for friends in the Durham area.
