John Ersel Cayton, Sr., USAF Retired, age 78 of Maxton passed away on Monday, February 1, 2010 at his home.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at the Maxton First Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Carl Redding. Burial with military honors will follow the service at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Cayton was born March 13, 1931 in Washington, North Carolina; son of the late Alton A. Cayton and Lizzie Edward Cayton. He retired from the United States Air Force after 23 years of dedicated service. He was a Vietnam War Veteran and also served in Germany. After Military service, Mr. Cayton returned to work and retired from Ryder Truck Rentals after 19 years of service.
He was a longtime faithful member of the Maxton First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Chairman of the Finance Committee, Building and Grounds and Hospitality Committee. He was also a member of the American Legion 117 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was known as the Angel Food Man of Maxton.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Cayton was also preceded in death by sons, Marvin Cayton and Henry A. Cayton, his daughter, Karen Boyle; a brother, Alton Leo Cayton and great grandson, Timothy Hobson; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Cayton and son-in-law, Jerry Lee McGowan, Sr.
John is survived by his wife, Gertrude Ruth Cayton of the home; sons, Joachim Butch Cayton of Maxton, John Johnny Cayton, Jr. and wife Sherri of Maxton, Richard A. Ricky Cayton and wife Valerie of Laurel Hill, Josh Cayton of Fort Jackson, GA; his daughters, Monique Cayton of Maxton, Cathy Locklear and husband Prentis of Maxton, Jessica Chavis and husband Jason of Laurinburg; brothers, Henry W. Cayton of Greenville, NC, Cleon Cayton of Chocowinity, NC; sisters, Juanita Saad of Greenville, NC, Phoebee Mills of Grimesland, NC, Marie Poore of Washington, NC, Lizzie Bunny Rowe, Judy Godley and Gloria Taylor all of Chocowinity, NC; sixteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 6th at Richard Boles Funeral Service.
