Mrs. Verna Mills Holley, 69, resident of 822 Respess St., Washington died Sunday Jan. 31, 2010 at Beaufort County Medical Center.
A funeral service will be conducted at noon on Saturday Feb. 6, 2010 in the Jobe’s Branch Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Mills Family Cemetery. Mrs. Holley was born in Pitt County on April 10, 1940 to the late Charlie Mills, Sr. and Velma Cox Mills. She attended the Pitt County Schools. She continued her studies at Beaufort County Community College. Verna was previously employed with Samson’s Shirt Factory and Britthaven of Washington for more than fifteen years. She was presently employed with Quality Home Staffing, Inc.
She took great pleasure in sewing, gardening and cooking. She was soft spoken and never complained even during her illness. Verna was united in marriage to Andrew Holley on Jan. 16, 1965, their union was blessed with six children including two sets of twins.
Survivors are: three sons, Antonio Holley of Washington, Anthony Holley of Chocowinity, Gary Wayne Holley of Charleston, S.C.; three daughters, Tongia Holley of the home, Angela Holley Boston (Elder Gregory Boston) of Plymouth, Kristen Joy Holley of the home; one stepdaughter, Brenda F. Holley of Washington; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two Godgrandsons; one daughter-in-kind, Emma Green; five sisters, Doris Counts of New York, NY, Velma Mills (William) of Greenville, Brenda Mills of Raleigh, Deborah Mills, Reneé Mills Hill (Charles), all of Maryland; five brothers, Charlie Mills Jr. of Greenville, Jimmie L. Mills (Thelma), Raymond Mills (Shelby), all of Grimesland, Ola Mills (Madilyn) of Michigan, Mike Santana of Greenville; two aunts, Rubelle Coleman of New York, Francis Cox of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters-in-law, Evealine Holley Moseley (Carlton), Doris Holley, all of Washington; three brothers-in-law, Nathaniel Holley (Gladys), John Holley Jr., James Holley (Paulette), all of Washington; an adopted brother-in-law, William E. Nelson of Washington; several nieces, nephews, cousins.
Preceding her in death were five siblings: Martha Mills Taylor, Fred Mills, Earl Mills, Fred Lee Mills, William R. Mills; three aunts: Hasty Mae Foreman, Pauline Mills, Queenie Cox.
A walk-in visitation will be conducted today 1-7 p.m. at the chapel. Family will receive friends at the home.
