A bridge-opening ceremony for the new U.S. Highway 17 bypass bridge over the Tar River is planned for Friday. The bridge, to be named for the late Ashley B. Futrell Sr., won’t open to traffic for several weeks, according to a N.C. Department of Transportation official. Futrell, who died in February 2005, was a state senator and publisher and editor of the Washington Daily News.
