GREENSBORO — Justin “Weasel” Moore and Marquin Hill moved two steps closer to winning state championships on Friday.
The Washington Pam Pack wrestlers won both of their matches during the first day of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A state championships, held at Greensboro Coliseum.
Moore, a 171-pounder, opened the tournament by pinning Mt. Pleasant’s Christian Carrillo in 1:34. The senior, now 42-1 this season and 162-18 in his career, followed that up with a 7-5 decision over Orange’s Nick Shriner.
The Pam Pack all-time win leader will face Northeast Guilford’s Ridge White in one semifinal match today. The other semifinal pits Tuscola’s David Atwood against Southwest Randolph’s Ethan Jarrell.
Moore finished runner-up at state as a junior, coming after a fourth-place finish his sophomore season.
Hill, a 285-pounder, pinned both of his opponents during Friday’s action. The junior, now 45-2 this season and 112-28 in his career, opened by taking down Northern Guilford’s Jacob Roberts in 3:47.
Hill, who took sixth at state last year, then pinned South Rowan’s Zach Howell in 3:32.
Fifth on the all-time win list at Washington with his 112 victories, Hill will face Enka’s Matt Brock in one semifinal match today. The other semifinal pits Clyde A. Erwin’s James Payne against Triton’s Ben Byerly.
Moore and Hill are aiming to join Russ Chesson and Larry Harris as Washington’s only state wrestling champions.
Chesson was a three-time state champ from 1995-97, after finishing runner-up his freshman season.
Larry Harris won state titles in 1987 and 1988.
Action picks up today at 8:30 a.m. The finals are slated to begin at 6 p.m.
