Mrs. Betty Hunt Burgess, 73, of 888 W. 2nd St., Apt. 4, Washington, N.C., died Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Beaufort County Medical Center. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 101 N. Bonner St., Washington, N.C. Father Kevin Johnson, officiating, burial in the Fragrance Garden at the church.
Mrs. Burgess was born on March 23, 1936, daughter of the late John L. and Gertrude Douglass Proctor. She attended and graduated from Washington High School. She furthered her studies at St. Mary’s and graduated from the East Carolina Teachers College. She did post graduate work in Social Services at North Carolina Central University. She was for many years a public school teacher and ended her work career as a Social Worker with the Durham County Department of Social Service.
She was a member at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, serving as a Lay Reader, Betty also worked with the Dental Clinic, Altar Guild, the Church Women organization. In the community, Mrs. Burgess was a volunteer with Eagles Wings, Mental Health, and a Tutor with the local adult Learning to Read Efforts.
She was married to Herbert Burgess who preceded her in death.
Surviving is a daughter Molly C. Seggerman (John), Durham, N.C.; a son James P. Cutler (Caroline) Myrtle Beach, S.C. She had eight grandchildren.
The family will receive friends after the interment at St. Peters.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider Eagles Wings or the Building Fund at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
