BLACK JACK, NC Mr. Charles Harper Gaskins, 74, went to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, February 27, 2010 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Private interment will be held at a later date.
Mr. Gaskins was a native and life long resident of the Black Jack community of Pitt County. He was employed at E.I. Dupont for a number of years and later operated Swift Royster Fertilizer Company in Grimesland for a number of years. He opened Gaskins Marina in Washington, which he operated until he became active in swine production on the family farm. In his retirement he was employed by Overtons Sporting Goods and raised purebred puppies.
Mr. Gaskins was a life long member of Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and in various other capacities through the years. A 32nd degree mason, he was a member of the Grimesland Masonic Lodge # 475 A.F. &A.M., the Sudan Temple and the Provost Guard. He served on the Board of Trustees of Pitt County Memorial Hospital from 1988 to 1997.
Mr. Gaskins was preceded in death by his parents, Furney V. and Cora Belle Gaskins.
He is survived by: His wife of 55 years, Janie Cayton Gaskins; daughters, Kathy G. Riggs and husband, Jeff, and Cindy G. Boyd and husband, J.M., all of Black Jack; sister, Sandra Gaskins of Black Jack; and five grandchildren, Kevin Riggs, Suzanne Riggs, Jenna Boyd and fiance, Josh Stahl, Alex Boyd and Jay Boyd.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Black Jack OFWB Church Building Fund, 2972 Black Jack-Simpson Road, Greenville, NC 27858.
