WINTERVILLE — Charity Watson has picked up in college right where she left off in high school.
Watson, a four-time Washington Daily News Pitcher of the Year, had a phenomenal career with the Washington Lady Pam Pack. She etched her name into several categories of the N.C. High School Athletic Association softball record book.
The freshman is now shining at the collegiate level, where she is pitching for the Pitt Community College Lady Bulldogs.
The freshman pitcher is 10-5 with a 0.55 ERA this season. Watson has fanned 170 and walked 60 in 101 innings. She has allowed just 22 hits in 19 games.
Watson was named "Pitcher of the Week" March 10 by the National Junior College Athletic Association.
She struck out 28 batters Sunday in a doubleheader against Surry Community College, helping the Bulldogs earn an 8-0 win in game one before taking game two by a 7-3 count. In 16 innings, she gave up just five hits and three runs (one earned) to go along with five walks.
Leading up to Sunday's performance, Watson tossed a five-inning no-hitter against N.C. Wesleyan on March 4 in which she struck out 12 and gave up just one run on four walks.
In a doubleheader sweep of Stanly Community College on Saturday, she threw 15 innings and allowed just three hits, two runs and eight walks to go along with 21 Ks.
In high school, Watson compiled 68 wins, recorded 1,245 strikeouts, posted 53 shutouts, including five perfect games and 18 no-hitters, and an unbelievable 0.29 career ERA.
Watson is ranked in the top 10 on the NCHSAA softball career-charts in several categories. Watson’s strikeout total (1,245) is third best, her ERA (0.29) is tied for third best, the 17 career no-hitters ranks fourth highest, her 604 2/3 innings pitched is fifth highest, the shutout total (53) ranks fifth, the five perfect games is tied for fifth and her victory total (68) ranks in the top 10 of all-time.
With a pair of victories over Wake Tech earlier this week, Pitt has now won six straight and is 13-6 overall this season.
