GREENVILLE — Jeremy Schaffer’s two-run home run in the seventh inning proved to be the game winner as Tulane took game two of the Saturday doubleheader 7-5 and walked away with the Conference USA series 2-1 at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the win the Green Wave improves to 19-10, 4-2 while the Pirates drop to 18-11 and 1-2 in league play.
The Pirates won the first game 15-6.
Leading 5-3 in the seventh, Schaffer stroked a full-count offering from Seth Simmons to straight away center scoring Rob Segedin just in front of him for the would-be game winning run. Segedin walked to open the frame and moved to second on a Simmons wild pitch before crossing home.
The Pirates had a chance to tie the game in the ninth when Kyle Roller collected his second double of the evening with two outs just before Zach Wright grounded out to third to end the game.
Tulane’s Robby Broach picked up the win to remain perfect on the season at 5-0. The right-hander struck out a career-best 10 Pirates’ and allowed three runs (all earned) on seven hits in seven full innings.
