Minor flooding shut down parts of Washington’s Fifth and Bridge streets Wednesday afternoon as motorists veered left to avoid standing water. One car stalled near the corner of Fifth Street and Hackney Avenue, and a sidewalk near City Hall was covered with backed-up water. Strong thunderstorms rocked parts of Beaufort County in the afternoon, dumping torrential rain on Washington and south of the Pamlico River, from Blounts Creek west to the Pitt County line.
