Sixty photos go on public viewing today as part of the Beaufort County Arts Council’s third annual Juried Photography Exhibition.
Those attending Thursday evening’s opening reception got a sneak peek at the show, which features pieces by 27 Beaufort County-based photographers, as well as others from Brevard, Beaufort, Morehead City, Greenville, Havelock, New Bern, Oriental, Rocky Mount, Williamston, Wilson, Maryland and Virginia, according to Joey Toler, BCAC executive director.
“I like it because it’s very eclectic,” Toler said of the show. “It’s just got a lot of different styles, a lot of different techniques. I like this photography show in general because photographs lend themselves to a lot of flexibility, and I think this show reflects that.”
Ann Ehringhaus, a photographer who makes her home on Ocracoke Island, was juror for this year’s show. She whittled the 150 entries down to the 60 that ultimately went on display as part of the show, which runs through Aug. 27.
The exhibition showcases work by youth to senior citizens, Toler said.
The photography show is a result of a photography category that had been part of the BCAC Fine Arts Show for years.
“This was originally part of the Fine Arts Show, but we got so many entries in that show that we decided to do photography separately,” Toler said. “And there have been so many advances in photography in the last 10 years, we felt it deserved its own show.”
Toler said he is happy with the response to the show, not only from local photographers but from those residing outside the Beaufort County area.
“The show grows each year,” he said. “We have more entries and from a wider area. I want the show to have a broad appeal to photographers.”
Another goal is to gain sponsors for more awards in coming years. Among those special awards now presented are the best in show prize, sponsored by Stewart’s Jewelry Store; the Washington Daily News Award; the Frank Sommerkamp History Award; Best Color — Digitally Enhanced and Best Color — Non-Enhanced, both sponsored by ASAP Photo &Camera.
The exhibit is open to the public Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Washington Civic Center Gallery. For more information, call 252-946-2504.
